My dad and I are currently looking for a light-ish weigh wheel for our 318ti autocross car and the front runners are some TR Motorsport C2 wheels. They cost something like $150 per corner new from tire rack plus $75ish shipping. I just found a set for sale near me, asking $475, and supposedly were only used for 6 days as an extra set of track wheels. My question is, do you think $475 is a fair price (no tires) I think its a little high but then again what do I know.

Thats going to happen regardless, Im just not sure if he doesnt budge on price if $475 is worth it or not for the wheels

Well I mean if they really have only been used for a week 475 sounds a lot better than 675

This is true. They look like they’re a little rough but they’re known as a good track wheel and the paint is basically garbage, so as long as they pass a good visual inspection I suppose its not a big deal

That’s his racecar. Six track days are a lot harder on the wheels than six daily driver days. With that said, a $50 discount from new per wheel is 25%. For something so lightly used that seems fair-ish. But then I’m a cheap bastard and I’d try to negotiate down to about $400.

Thats pretty much exactly my thinking. They’d basically be going from his racecar to mine and I’ve only heard good things about these wheels, which have become the go to for the E36 track crowd.

19lbs is a little heavy for a 17x8.5, in terms of an autox wheel.
Also, I think $475 is a bit high, but not too bad. It’ll be tough to find a used set of wheels for less than $400-450.
However, if I were you I’d be looking for a set of
Kosei K1s
. $175/ea brand new, and they only weigh 16.8lbs.
They’re a favorite with various Spec BMW, track, and autox cars, so I’d imagine you should be able to find a used set for your car for a nice price (at worst around the same as those TRM C2s).
I picked up a different set of used Kosei wheels, the K1-TS that’s now discontinued, for my FR-S for $450. Koseis are a great light weight alternative to something like the RPF1.

Unless your budget’s really tight, you might want to think about whether saving a relatively small amount on secondhand wheels with unknown provenance is a good idea. The last thing you want is a wheel breaking at speed in a corner due to invisible damage done by the previous owner.

We’ve got a friend who used a set of K1s on his E36 M3 and busted 7 different spokes in about 2 years which has us pretty much off of them. We’re not super competitive so its not like we’re going for every tenth of a second that we can get but a 19lb 17x8.5 wheel will still be a huge upgrade over a 22lb 16x7 wheel.

Interesting. I know a lot of people who have run Koseis with no issues, particularly in a relatively easy on the wheels sport like autox.
There are other options out there too, I’d probably look around to see if you can find any other lighter options.

Also if you want more options don’t limit yourself to just wheels specifically for your car. Generally anything with the same lug spacing should work. $400-$500 sounds like a good range for lightly used wheels though. Finding a set with dead tires can also be an option since you plan to get your own anyways.

I think a lot of it has to due with how the car is set up/driven. I know his car for example is about as stiff as possible so the wheels take a lot of abuse. But my dad just told me that he’s getting a set of Moda by BBS wheels, which are far from light but they’re for free so I guess thats going to end our search.

My dad actually found a guy who wants to give him a set of wheels for free so I think thats going to end the search.

Nice!
I’d still keep an eye out though. I’m always looking, even if I’m not really looking to buy. Think of it this way, if you stumble across a deal you can pick them up and then sell the Modas to offset the cost of whatever you find later.

Thats pretty much how I do everything with cars, if a good deal comes along Ill always take it, keeping in mind that I can probably profit off of it later if what I really want suddenly becomes available

Exactly. That’s why I bought a header recently, even though I don’t have everything else I’ll need to install it properly (basically a tune, front pipe, over pipe, and quieter catback), but I got it for bottom dollar and at the worst can sell it for what I paid or more.
